Whilst keeping clear of the water on the West Coast, I did have time on my hands to discover some pioneering new friends in Perth!
LOVE the works of Perth Artist, Matt Doust. Matt was well received for having painted Gemma Ward for the Archibald Prize! This painting ‘The Movement’, hangs in newly made friend and “Perth know all” the gorgeous Elana Rosa, who is also one of the buyers at the store Dilettante.
The kinetic butterfly sculpture, a work by Tane Andrews another young talented artist who exhibited eariler this year Venn Gallery, Perth. Now that’s a great gallery.
If Kym Ellery, of ELLERY fame, ever got bored of Fashion Designing I think she’d make an unbelievable tour guide! We cruised her hometown Perth during it’s Fashion Festival and here’s what we got up to…

Kym and I looking at potential store spaces in Perth, it’s a dream of Kym’s to have a store in her hometown.

Stores; Riccarda on Hay street Subiaco for something adult and eloquent. Pop is for a hit of Margeila or Missoni; two very important “M’s”. Dilettante is fabulous when feeling like a directional injection into one’s wardrobe. Vivienne Westwood masterpieces hung alongside quirky Tsumori Chisato items. So much fun.
Cafe;
My absolute favourite place to eat breakfast in Perth is at Greenhouse on St. Georges Terrace, Perth City. Eco friendly and with decor that is evidently recycled, I can’t get enough of the pork and potato dish complete with poached eggs. I am officially addicted.
Restaurant;
Balthazar on The Esplanade in Perth City is the ultimate in fine dining for WA.
Outdoors;
My favourite thing to do is run on the hard sand from Trigg beach to Scarborough. Going against the fierce Fremantle doctor winds certainly makes for a good way to clear your mind; exponentially.
Art;
Art is something that thrives in Western Australia. I was raised in what felt like a permanent exhibition opening. From the Fremantle Art Centre, to PICA to the Art Gallery of Western Australia there are so many creative environments to absorb. I recommend them all.
We asked Bridget Fleming to send us a visual roundup and commentary from her street snapping days at the fashion show circuit this SS12 season…
” Freja. In this case, her long legs were striding forward, her hands gesturing, “hurry up and take the shot. Press the button. Click. Come on.” I think she thought I was someone else, maybe I was wearing heels that day. I’m not sure. But she was really nice the following day and I am becoming much better at walking backwards to get a shot, quickly, especially in heels! ” BF

Photo lesson 101. Try to get Arizona Muse in focus. Most magazines want images of her. Tick.
Backstage at Dries Van Noten.
Front row at the Sass and Bide show London. I love going to this show for so many reasons. It’s like the Vegemite of fashion for an Expat.

After so many shows, in so many cities, you know almost everyone by face, name and or personally. Smile.
A sea of guests and models always outside a show, on cell (err mobile) phones, desperately trying to locate their drivers.

There is just something about the light after a sun shower. Even in London.

I don’t know what it is about the Dazed and Confused team, but after coming home to crunch through my images, I realized that I had a fixation, albeit unconscious, on chasing Jefferson’s team for a shot. Maybe it has something to do with the fact that their Fashion Editor Katie Shillingford is almost always impossible to catch, she seems to calculate her entry at each show, cleverly managing to avoid most of the photographers on almost every occasion. I love the image of her, heels in hand, after leaving a show at the Tuileries.
Bridget Fleming an Expat from Oz, now living in New York has the fab blog, downtownfrombehind. A photographic series capturing subjects riding their bike from behind on streets, avenues and lanes in downtown NYC.
“Twice yearly I join a manic thirty plus day schedule of photography and fashion in New York, London, Milan and Paris. The first few days your body aches, the next week you find a groove and finally editing some 1600 images each evening just feels like any other day. There are always shows you can depend upon to be an absolute highlight, shows or designers that are an unexpected surprise and at the very least, good coffee by the time you land in Milan. My images pop up on the pages of the Marie Claire to Harpers Bazaar, Vogue to Telegraph amongst others. Each client wants or will run something a little different. Last season it was colour blocking, this season it was clashing patterns and dip dyed hair. And in between shooting to brief, I always try to shoot something for me. The moments between moments that keep it interesting. My images are not on a blog, maybe they should be, maybe next year!” Bridget
Clashing patterns, prints, sparkles, sequins. That is what Vogue will show you next month.
Downtime
(One) of the best reasons to have your boyfriend join you in Paris… he’ll (happily?) line up for your ice-cream at the Tuileries while you shoot. Best boyfriend ever!
